Case Studies
Healing Fields Foundation has provided tangible benefits to individuals, families and communities who would otherwise have no access to health insurance. Below are selected case studies of individuals that Healing Fields have served.
Sumana Reddy – Nizamabad
Sumana Reddy is a native of Vinayak Nagar in Nizamabad. Her husband came to know about the Healing Fields health insurance scheme and enrolled himself and his family. Just a few weeks later, Sumana was admitted in Pragathi Hospital, a networked hospital in the town, for severe abdominal pain. Diagnosed with kidney stones, she was treated with a surgical procedure. She was discharged a week later, bearing only Rs. 1,880 as co-payment. In total, the family saved over Rs. 7,000, including Rs.160, towards post-hospitalization medicines. If they had not enrolled and availed of this benefit they would have had to borrow the amount at about 42% interest and the expenditure would have been higher.
The Ahalya Family – Warangal
The Ahalya family is a member of a community self-help group in the Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh and had taken health and personal accident insurance for a premium of Rs.336 per year. Tragically, the mother of the family, Cheekati, was killed in an auto accident approximately 10 months after enrolling in the insurance plan. Thanks to the insurance, her husband was awarded a death benefit Rs.25,000, and her two daughters secured a marriage benefit of Rs.5,000 each, as well as Rs.5,000 each towards education. Their son received an education benefit of Rs.5,000. The total benefit received by the insured family was Rs.45,000. The daughters said that their mother was insistent that they should go to school and get an education and her dreams were finally realized. Thanks to Healing Fields and its innovative financing program.
S. Muttamma – Khammam
Tribal communities are often migratory and have highly inconsistent access to health care resources. S. Muttamma, a resident of Narasingapeta village in Khammam district, joined the health insurance scheme offered by Healing Fields, paying Rs.336 as annual premium. Members of her community typically have to travel over 40 kilometers to avail any health services in government hospitals. Muttamma was admitted to a Healing Fields network hospital with fever and was diagnosed with cerebral malaria – a life-threatening medical emergency. Immediate treatment was given and she was discharged after one week. Muttamma and her family benefited by saving over Rs. 3,000 on this hospitalization because of her health insurance coverage. In addition, Muttamma was given post-hospitalization medicines and transportation benefits in additional to wage compensation. If she was not part of this program, Muttamma would have to go to the traditional healers in the thanda and by the time she would have approached the hospital she would have possibly lost her life and the family would have been caught in deep debt trap as they would have had to borrow money at very high interest rates.
Ajay Suvartha – Warangal
Ajay Suvartha is years old and a resident of the Warangal district in Andhra Pradesh. Ajay’s mother joined the health insurance scheme offered by Healing Fields when it became available in her community. Several months later, Ajay was admitted in the hospital for stomach pain, diagnosed with acute appendicitis and treated with a surgical procedure. His mother paid Rs.1,433 as co-payment, realizing total benefits of over Rs.4,000, including post-hospitalization medicines.
